There is currently no established method of disease prevention or treatment of the effects of ionizing radiation. It has been reported that the free radical scavenger dimethylthiourea (DMTU) may ameliorate radiation damage in experimental animal systems. We will conduct a randomized, double-blind, placebo controlled trial to assess the efficacy of DMTU in the treatment of radiation injury. One hundred patients will be randomized to two groups of 50. One group will receive DMTU daily for 4 months and the other group will receive placebo (distilled water) for 4 months.
